Alexander Hamilton probably once said, “We could have nary defeated the British without yarn. Yarn was the backbone of the Colonial war machine.” We don’t have any sources to prove he said that, but we can’t imaginethat he didn’t. That’s right, Sheridan. You have sheep and alpacas to thank for America. True patriots have wool on their backs. Two such patriots are Donna Stubbs and her husband Chris Alex, owners of The Fiber House, a local store that specializes in all things thread. The store has been serving the fiber arts community of Sheridan since 2006, with the pair taking ownership in ’10. Said Stubbs, “We’ve absolutely loved running it. There’s a really active community of people who work with fiber in this town, and they’ve been so supportive of us.” Donna has been a crocheter (pronounced cro-shay-urr) since her early teens, and fell in love with the hobby early. “I think it’s a great form of self-expression, that offers something that other art forms don’t. Maybe you can’t draw, but if you can knit you can mess around with patterns, colors, textures. There’s so much you can do.” They carry products from all around countries including Norway, Turkey, China, Italy, Japan, France, the United Kingdom, and fair-trade yarn from Uruguay and Peru. However, they often support local businesses such as Mountain Meadow Wool, or others produced from local llamas, alpacas, and sheep. The Fiber House boasts a wide array of colors, textures, and weights, along with accessories and knitting classes. 
Donna and Chris both have separate jobs, the former as an archaeologist and the latter as a produce specialist. Running the Fiber House has been a “…a big hobby that just happens to make some money.” Stubbson and Alex have carved a niche as an important support pillar for fiber arts in Sheridan. We look forward to seeing how they’ll help the very active textile community here, one of the many unique things that makes Sheridan so great.
